What is Bio-Matrix?
Bio-Matrix is a 100% natural Peat Moss product harvested from peat bogs in Canada. It is specially heat dried to remove water, but otherwise contains no additives of any kind. It is a non-toxic, all natural, 100% organic, lab-tested, field-proven, industrial absorbent.
Bio-Matrix is so absorbent that just 55 pounds of it will absorb 50 gallons of crude oil.
What Does It Do?
Bio-Matrix is an extraordinarily effective absorbent material. Its special qualities enable it to capture:
- Oils and Fuels
- Insecticides & Herbicides
Bio-Matrix floats on water and absorbs chemicals that are floating on the surface with it.
Bio-Matrix also acts as a powerful bio-remediation agent, breaking down absorbed hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide.
How Fast Does It Absorb?
The following table shows typical absorption rates for common spill chemicals:
|Engine Oil||20 seconds
|Light Crude||60 seconds
|Heavy Crude||90 seconds
How Does It Work?
Peat moss granules are laced with microscopic chambers. In their natural state in a peat bog, these chambers absorb water. But, when the peat is dried using the special Bio-Matrix drying process, the chambers change their character, expelling the water and developing an affinity for hydrocarbons. Correctly dried peat moss has millions of microscopic pores with a powerful wicking action that sucks in hydrocarbons on contact. After drying, each chamber contains bacteria and catalysts that break down the hydrocarbons. 80% reduction of hydrocarbons to water and carbon dioxide occurs in 30 days and is nearly 100% in 100 days.
How Does It Compare?
The most common hydrocarbon absorbents, such as kitty litter, are made from clay. Clay absorbents work only because the natural stickiness of most oils causes the oil to cling to the outside surface of the clay pellets. The clay does not actually absorb the oil and it does not break it down into harmless chemicals.
Under most circumstances a single 50lb bag of Bio-Matrix will absorb as much as 1000lbs of clay (kitty litter).
Because of its powerful absorbency, Bio-Matrix outperforms clay products by volume. This means that, even though Bio-Matrix costs more than clay products by weight, in nearly every case it is, gallon for gallon of spill, far less costly.
